Vince Carter & the Vince Carter Sanctuary

Though he prefers the name "Vince", he was born Vincent Lamar Carter in Daytona Beach, Florida at Halifax Hospital on January 26, 1977.

Vince is arguably the most gifted and celebrated basketball player to come from the great State of Florida. As a Tarheel at the University of North Carolina from 1995 through 1998, Vince helped the team make it to the final four in 1997 and 1998. In both of these games he was the leading scorer. His outstanding college play propelled him to be among the five (5) finalists for the prestigious "John Wooden Award" and the national player of the year award.

Vince was among the top five draft picks in the 1998 NBA draft, and joined the Toronto Raptors where he distinguished himself in his rookie year. He was selected as The 1999 NBA "Rookie of the Year," earning 113 of 118 possible points.

Vince distinguished himself as the NBA Slam Dunk Contest winner in 2000, and proudly represented the United States on the Olympic Basketball Team that same year. He wowed the crowds in Hawaii, Japan, and Australia and is one of the proud United States gold medal winners.

Vince led the Toronto Raptors to three playoff berths, and after joining the New Jersey Nets in 2004, he led the Nets to two playoff berths. He was selected as an NBA All-Star for eight consecutive years.

Just recently, Vince was traded to the Orlando Magic, where we are looking forward to having him back home in the great State of Florida.

In 2007 Vince and his mother, Michelle Carter-Scott, donated $1.6 million to the Stewart-Marchman-Act Foundation to help in the construction of what is now the Vince Carter Sanctuary.

Vince's mother said, "Vince has done a lot of things and this probably is the one thing that he has invested in that has made me the most proud. It can be so far-reaching and so good for a lot longer than Vince or I are still on this Earth. This $1.6 million investment at the end of the day is going to be priceless because it's going to save so many people. How can you put a price tag on somebody's life or somebody who's had a wonderful life, lost it, and now has it back?"
